The plight of our billions of nonhuman victims is desperate. These are sentient individuals whose most basic right – the right to own their own lives, their very own selves – is denied. Mothers, fathers, babies, brothers, sisters, friends who are enslaved, imprisoned and destined to die in fear and gore, the horrors that they face every day are beyond our worst nightmares.
What are we doing about it? You see we can all shake our heads and say how awful it is. We can cry and rage and say how we hate those that inflict the outrages we see on the videos. We can share nightmarish posts of their terror and torment. We can protest and complain.
But unless we actually change ourselves, all the noise we make is a complete waste of time. Because it’s not ‘someone else’ who’s causing the nightmare – we are. The industries that make their income from nonhuman exploitation are doing it in response to consumer demand. And ‘consumer demand’ is created every single time you and I spend money on something. So it makes no sense to complain about something we ourselves are directly responsible for causing.
What does make perfect sense is for us to stop creating that demand. And that means becoming vegan. The next step is to spread the vegan message. It really is that simple.
